Our second grading period is upon us, and report cards will be going home in backpacks on Friday the 10th. Please use this as an opportunity to talk to your child about your hopes and expectations for their performance in the last year of elementary school. I think one of the most important thing that we can do for fifth graders is to help them transition into more independent learners, with homework and all other schoolwork.
Overnight Field Trip
Many students have returned their read-a-thon money, but many haven’t. Please help your child complete this process by facilitating their communication with any adult that may have pledged to sponsor them. Turn whatever money they are able to collect as soon as possible. Thank you for your help with this.
We have a tentative date and plan for our first tamale fundraiser. I’m in discussions with an Atkinson immersion family that will help us with a commercial kitchen and the organization of the effort later this month. We will need help from volunteers to, among other things, bag tamales and insert invoices in the bag, the delivery and distribution of the tamales at the school. All the sales will be prepaid. The making of the tamales will take place probably on Monday, February 20th, President’s Day. I will send home a flyer with more information and request for volunteers as soon as I verify the details.
Academic Updates
Social Studies
We are studying the beginning of the Colonial period in American History, and the various factors that contributed to life in the settlements, for the Europeans, as well as how this affected the Native Americans, as well as the beginnings of slavery in our country.
Science
We are in the middle of our study of scientific experiments and what constitutes a variable. Students will eventually be designing their own experiments. My hope is to have a science fair in our classroom and invite you all to see it. Stay tuned.
Reading
Halfway through the school year, we are now going to be switching the structure of the literacy lessons in both languages. In English, we will use the Reading Street district curriculum, which comes with explicit lessons on reading skills and strategies, as well as spelling, weekly assessments and videos and online homework students can do at home. In Spanish, we will move into novel groups and reading journals, also reviewing the week’s reading skills in our annual plan.
Writing
We are finishing our imaginary stories and moving into expository writing in Spanish. Students will get to write about a subject they know well.
Math
We are moving into our fourth unit in math, which has students working with fractions, percentages and decimals, one of my favorite math topics.
THANK YOU!
Thanks for everything you do to help your child succeed in school. It makes a difference!
Sincerely,
Maestra Alma

Our visit to Courtyard Commons! Nuestra Visita a Courtyard Commons
The students made some beautiful holiday cards last month and a small group of them had a chance to deliver them this week. The residents of the assisted living facility were so delighted that we've decided to make them our pen pals! The whole class will visit them to bring them some Valentine's Day cards. Here's a picture for your enjoyment. Don't the kids look so sweet?!!

A few days back from winter break and it feels as though we never left! We’re working hard at meeting all our goals before the end of the month, which marks the end of the second grading period. The first report cards of the year go home the first week in February.
Overnight Field Trip
Please make sure you help your child collect and the monies they raised during the read-a-thon. We would like all the money turned in during the week of the 17th through the 20th of this month. Whatever cash we can fundraise will go a good ways toward helping us meet our goal of making our overnight field trip as affordable as possible for everyone.
I am already in conversations with the people from whom we will borrow a commercial kitchen to make the tamales for our first tamale fund-raiser. I will let you know of the details as soon as I know them.
Meanwhile, please consider contributing to the Atkinson PTA’s direct campaign, which is underway. Remember that one of its main goals is to help pay for all the overnight field trips for the 4th and 5th graders.
Holiday Celebration
I want to thank Yoli’s mom, Silvia Mondragon, and all the amazing parents who helped to make our posada such a fun event. It was really special thanks to you all! The kids really enjoyed themselves.
St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive
I am also very happy to report that our class led a very successful effort to raise money and collect food donations to help needy families through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. With your help, we raised enough food for 700 meals, along with over $500 to help St. Vincent do their job. Thanks so much for your efforts! Our class brought the most canned food of all classes!
Homework:
I’ve been hearing from many students that they don’t have time to do their homework because of their daily obligations after school. In order for them to be up-to-speed in class each day, they need anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour each night to complete the 30 minutes of required reading and anything else assigned. This is especially important as we move forward in the year. Students need to have consistent habits that will help them succeed in school, and every year I hear from former students that the demand for homework in middle school increases considerably. Please help them prepare for that by allowing this quiet time at home for them to do their work. I appreciate all your help with this.
Academic Updates
Social Studies
We are beginning an essay on the Native American cultures we’ve studied this year, comparing and contrasting their characteristics. By the middle of this month, we will be moving toward the history of Colonial America.
Science
We’re studying the solar system. In particular, we’re looking at how the tilt of our planet affects the seasons, rather than our distance from the sun. We will be building models of the earth’s rotation on its axis and its orbit around the sun.
Reading
We’ve started a cycle of new magazines and other nonfiction materials in English. We will also be reading biographies as a way to get exposure to a variety of nonfiction reading genres. The students’ reading abilities are being assessed individually in three specific areas: fluency, vocabulary and comprehension in both languages. Last week we took our second unit test, and it was clear that some review of test taking strategies is helping them better show what they know.
Writing
We are starting a new unit on imaginary writing in English.
Math
We are moving along with our third unit on geometry, discussing angles, vertices and area of geometric shape. We will soon begin measure volume in three-dimensional shapes.
THANK YOU!

I would like to thank ALL of you for making it to the Fall Conferences. It was wonderful to have had a chance to tell you how your child is doing in school. I hope you received useful information. Please know that you are always welcome to email me at avelazqu@pps.net and or call me at school at 503-916-6333 and leave me a voicemail if I’m not available. If you would like to have more time to chat, do contact me to set up an appointment.
Overnight Field Trip
While the Atkinson PTA’s direct campaign is underway with among its goals that of funding all the overnight field trips for the 4th and 5th graders, we want to ensure that we make every effort possible to get to the date of our trip with all costs covered.
This week, on Friday, we will hold a read-a-thon to help us in that effort. Students are encouraged to bring any book they would like to from home. We will spend the whole day reading. While students may bring a sleeping bag and wear comfortable clothes, they do need to dress appropriately for the weather and wear regular shoes, since they will be going out to recess after lunch.
Please help your child this weekend and in the coming days by guiding him or her in the collection of pledges from friends and family members.
Holiday Celebration
Yoli’s mom, Silvia Mondragon, has been organizing a Posada for our class. Posadas are traditional celebrations around the holiday seasons, particularly in Mexico, where piñatas are broken. They happen on the days leading up to December 25th. This will be a pot-luck celebration, with two piñatas filled with fruits and peanuts in the shell, as it’s traditional. Please bring a dish to share. It will take place in our classroom after school on Dec. 16th. We also need plates, forks, napkins, and mandarin oranges, peanuts in the shell and other fruit to fill the piñata. Donations may be dropped off prior to the party. There’s a cardboard box in the back of our classroom where you can leave your donations. Please be sure to be present if your child will be there. We would love for everyone to make it!
St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive
As you may know by now, our class is leading a school-wide fundraiser to help hungry families in our community. We will collect food until Thursday, Dec. 15th. Please send anything you can. We want to do as much as possible to help needy families this winter and holiday season. Cash donations are also welcome and they should be taken to the office and placed into the food drive’s box. Thank you for all you can do!

We’re completing our work about Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge in the next two weeks, and expect to be jumping into the study of our solar system as soon as we get back from winter break.
Reading
We’ve started a new cycle of novel reading in English and students reading abilities are being assessed individually in three specific areas: fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Together, we’re setting goals. In Spanish, we’ve completed our second unit of readings and we will be reviewing several reading skills and strategies prior to the unit assessment before the break.
Writing
We are starting a new unit on imaginary writing in Spanish.
Math
We are completing a set of lessons on two-digit multiplication and division. Our assessment will come soon after. The next unit will be on geometry.
THANK YOU!
Thanks for everything you do to help your child succeed in school. It makes a difference!
Sincerely,
Maestra Alma

Conferences are around the corner and if you still haven’t called to schedule one with the front office or outside the classroom, please do so AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I want to have a chance to sit down with you and tell you how your child is doing so far this year and set some goals for the coming months for all of them.
The PTA’s direct fundraising campaign forms went home in the last couple of weeks. Please consider donating to this effort, which is the first way that we will try to find our overnight field trip in the spring. Following this effort, the PTA will help us determine how much money remains to be fundraised, and then we will move to plan our tamale sales for the year.
Here’s what we’re doing in the classroom:
Math:
We are well on our way into the second unit in our math curriculum, with students getting a better handle on concretely describing and outlining two-digit multiplication.
Reading:
In our Spanish reading block, we continue to explicitly describe skills that better help us understand our reading. We’ve talked about comparing and contrasting characters and stories, fact and opinion, the author’s purpose, among others. We’re making sure that we understand how to apply these skills in our readings in both languages.
Writing:
We are finishing our Personal Narrative unit, and are completing a sample of student writing that we can use to show what we have learned in writing since the beginning of the year.
Science:
Following our second field trip to Oaks Bottom, we are preparing individual oral presentations on specific subjects. They range from the human impact on the habitat of the wetland, to the intricacies of the wooly bear caterpillar, which is very common there.
Social Studies:
We are studying how different native people throughout the country used their natural resources to survive. Ask your child how the Cheyenne, in the Great Plains region, and the Iroquois, in the Northeastern region, did this. We will also learn about the Northwest’s Chinook and the Southwest’s Hopi.
Communications with the teacher:
Please remember that you can call me and leave me a message in the office at 503-916-6333, or email me at avelazqu@pps.net. You are also welcome to stop by for a brief chat before or after school any time or make an appointment with me if you’d like to talk about something more in-depth.
Thanks!
Thanks for everything you do every day to make sure your child comes to school ready to learn. Honestly, it’s an honor working with children who come from strong families.
Maestra Alma.

Monthly newsletter for the 5th Grade Spanish Immersion class, Atkinson Elementary.
October 11, 2011
By Maestra Alma D. Velázquez
We’ve had a really good start to the school year in September, and the students seem to be adapting well to their daily and weekly routines. We’re half way through the first term of the year, and I am already preparing the work that I want to show you at conferences in November. Please sign up for those outside the classroom if you haven’t. They are a great way to determine what our goals will be for the year on an individual student basis.
Also, if you are waiting for the conferences to discuss with me any concerns you may have about your child, please don’t. Let’s set up a time to talk soon so that we may address all of their needs as quickly as possible.
Here’s a summary of what we’re doing in the classroom.
Math:
We’re nearly done with our first unit of the new math curriculum, and the students seem to be enjoying the hands-on activities, games and regular lessons. Many speak of math as their favorite subject. We’re getting ready for our first assessment of what we’ve learned since the beginning of the year.
Reading:
We’re making good progress through our Spanish literacy curriculum and the students are showing their mastery of new vocabulary words in formal and informal ways. We’ve had our regular weekly assessments, which test the reading skills and strategies that we focus on with each new reading. I’m getting ready to call on some of the parents who volunteered to help with small reading groups in Spanish. Your presence will be greatly appreciated.
In our reading block in English, we have selected new novels this week for independent reading and group discussions. The students had several books to choose from and they seem to really be enjoying their choices.
Writing:
Last month we wrote poems in Spanish, based on our experiences, goals and imaginative ideas. Early this month, they also took one of those ideas and developed it into a narrative in English for a writing sample that will help us track their progress in writing this year. Now we’re working on adding sensory details to our writing (how things feel, look, sound, taste, etc.) by looking at the work of good writers and noticing what they do.
Science:
We’re developing a plan for our next visit to Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. We’ve broken up into teams and are determining how each team will do its work and the materials we need to do those tasks. The students are anxious to get back there and get going. We plan on creating a map of the wetlands area based on landmarks, surveying plants, animals and looking at the different types of soils. We hope to be able to do all those tasks by teams during our trip on November 1.
Social Studies:
We took a short break from the chronological timeline where we’re tracking the history of the United States to discuss the significance of the arrival of Europeans on the hemisphere as the Columbus Day holiday came. We discussed the many consequences that came from that, including the cultural losses that the many indigenous peoples suffered.
Beyond that, we will soon be moving to looking at the different regions of the country and what makes them unique, include the indigenous people native to the area and their cultural traditions and ways of life.
Communicatings with the teacher:
Please remember that you can call me and leave me a message in the office at 503-916-6333, or email me at avelazqu@pps.net. You are also welcome to stop by for a brief chat before or after school any time or make an appointment with me if you’d like to talk about something more in-depth.

Dear parents,
Thank you to those of you who were able to make it last night to Back to School Night. It was great to be able to share with you some of our plans for the school year. If you didn't make it and would like a few minutes to sit down with me so I can share this information with you, please let me know. Also, let me know if you have any follow-up questions.
I also really want to thank Gabriela for her incredible translation skills. It allowed me to make sure that I was sharing the information equally with everybody. Mil Gracias!
This email is to confirm with you that you would like a paper copy of my newsletter. If you would prefer just the email version, please reply to this email.
I hope you're enjoying what are probably the last of our warm days.
Have a great weekend!
